FAQ

Eligibility

Q.    If I sit the test and pass, will I get into the Fire Service I selected?

A.   The VST is one part of your application to the Fire Service. You will need to have passed all components of the test before being considered for the further application stages.

Registering

Q.  How do I register to sit the VST?

A.  Following a successful application to the Fire Service via their recruitment websites, you will receive an invitation to sit the VST. Only applicants who receive an invitation to sit the exam will be able to register for an exam.

Q.  What do I need to register?

A.  You will need a current photograph to upload to the application, your driver licence or passport, a current email address and a valid credit card to make payment.

Q.  Do I need a professional photo for the registration?

A.  No, you can arrange your own photo but you should look professional, as you would use for a CV, licence or passport. Poor quality images will be rejected and you will receive an alert requiring you to upload a better image. Failure to replace the image in the advised time will result in cancellation of your exam booking.

Q.  What about payment?

A. The fee to sit the VST is $176 (GST incl.). When you register online you will be required to pay by credit card or debit card. You will also have the opportunity to purchase optional practise materials at the time of registering.

Q.  Can I change my contact details after registering?

A. Yes, you will have a limited opportunity to log in to the Candidate Account you have created, using the account details and your password. Select ‘Update details’, from the options on the left. Details must match those on file with your chosen fire service.

Q.  I have tried to book on the website but the date and location are full. What can I do?

A. Spaces are limited and will fill quickly. No further test sessions have been scheduled at this time. Please refer to the fire services websites for further dates to be released.

Preparation materials

Q. How do I access my preparation materials?
A. The preparation materials are available in PDF format only. If you purchased your Practice Tests via the Candidate Registration site, please log in to your account to access the materials. Alternatively, if you purchased the Practice Materials via the ACER Online Shop using the link on our website, please use the ACER Shop login you created to access the materials.

Q. Will I be able to access the preparation materials as soon as I have paid?
A. As soon as your payment has been processed successfully you will be able to log in to your account and access your materials.

Q. I didn't receive an email after I purchased preparation materials. Where do I go to access the materials?
A.
Firstly, please check your junk/spam mail folder to ensure that the email we sent you did not end up there. If the email is not there, you need to save vst@acer.org in your address book, because some email providers aggressively block emails. Adding the ACER VST email address to your address book generally solves the problem. You can access the preparation materials by logging in to your account.

Q. How long will I have access to the materials?
A.
The purchase of preparation material entitles you five (5) downloads and 60 days to download the files, commencing on the date the practice test is made accessible to you.

Q. Where are the answers for the preparation materials?
A.
Answers to all questions are given at the end of the booklet.

Test

Q. How will I know the exact location of the test centre?
A.
At the time of registration, candidates should select their preferred test centre based on the locations available. Registered candidates will receive an Admission Ticket approximately four (4) days prior to the test date. The Admission Ticket will show the exact location of the test centre and the reporting time for your chosen test session.

Q. How long is the test?
A.
The VST consists of two (2) hours and forty (40) minutes of test time, plus instruction time. However, you may need to allow at least three-and-a-half (3 and 1/2)  hours at the test centre for the completion of all testing procedures and for registration.

Results

Q. How will I know my results are ready?
A.
The Fire Service will advise candidates via email if they have been successful in progressing through to the next stage of the recruitment process.

Q. When will I receive my results?
A.
The Fire Service will notify candidates whether results are accessible. To protect candidate confidentiality, results cannot be released over the phone, or by fax. ACER will not provide results to candidates.
